We are kama 'aina!...That's Hawaiian for "folks who are living in the islands." We have routines, schedules, and we know our way around to most important places. That doesn't mean we don't lean heavily on the GPS when setting off on an adventure, but finally, a trip to the grocery store or library no longer fits into the category of "adventure." We've made good friends, and many new interesting acquaintances. Our 7 year old started at the local school where they teach Japanese and where he feels "smart" in math. Our 10 year old is working on reading every book in the Kailua library and eagerly awaiting a visit from his friend who will be here for 2 weeks. We snorkel at Hanauma bay every Monday morning, Susan is singing in the church choir, John and Noah are paddling in the canoe clubs, there's papaya at the farmer's market each Thursday, and recently, we had so many social engagements that we over-booked! So it's a sign to me that we've created a spot for ourselves in this new community.

Our Hawaiian life

Great to see Susan with the boys! Wow do you look like you are having fun. We are ready for summer. GREAT holiday weekend. The neighborhood is really a friendly place to be. We miss you. Our little guys plus Will decided to harvest Charlie and Sharon's orange tree for some reason. Lots of pictures/letters of apology and actually went well with the Sterns. Reminded me of the hedge cutting. Boys will be boys??? Anyway it was funny after the fact but they promise to never do anything like that again! Of course in Hawaii it's okay to pick the fruit from your neighbor's tree if it falls in your yard? School is almost out. The fun days of field trips and end of year parties. It won't be long and you will be heading back (you are coming back?????). Thanks for keeping us posted. I'll email too next week.
ReplyDeleteIsn't this typical? You get acclimated to life in Hawaii, making friends, putting down some roots, and before you know it, you need to think about returning to Wisconsin. Hope you'll be excited to return here as much as we'll be excited to have you back!!!
