A visit to the Honolulu fish auction with Pierre Kleiber, Ph.D. fisheries biologist. We got up early for this field trip, as the bell rings at the fish market at 5:30 a.m. Pierre taught us that these swordfish and marlins below show up on the pallets with their bills cut off by the fishermen so that they take up less room.
He taught us about how the auctioneers and buyers assess the value of the fish. They look at color, size, freshness, oiliness, assess for parasites... The process happens early every morning, and it's over before 8 a.m. when the buyers then haul away their fresh fish on ice.
Below we are listening to Pierre teach us about the fish. You can see Grandpa is here with us taking in the sites! We're enjoying his company.
The fishing boats such as the Sea Dragon II are long line boats, with hooks baited every few feet along a line that extends out behind the boat. These boats stay out for up to two weeks before returning with their catch.
Moonfish in front of Silas, auction behind him. Booted buyers snatching up fresh catch!
yeah, I'm so happy to see Grandpa visiting you. He didn't think it make it over did he? Wow that is wonderful. I'm sure the boys were just thrilled to have him visit. And wow, those are some fish. Did you get any yourselves? We still look forward eagerly to your posts. Miss you around here. Enjoying spring that has finally come to Wisconsin. Aloha to you from the neighborhood. The boys miss you boys. See ya.
ReplyDeleteWe are so happy you look at the blog! I told you about the t-shirt my brother saw that says..."more people have read this shirt than your blog!" Having Grandpa visit has been wonderful. Seeing him snorkel at Hanauma Bay was a blast. Old dog, new tricks, and all that.. We miss you guys too.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't get any fish at the market, but we're going back again next week. I doubt we will then either, as it's a lot of fish! It's mostly retail, wholesale, and restaurant sectors buying at the auction, but we did see one or two folks with their ice filled coolers in the truck of the civic...
I made sure I put a picture in the blog that I was in this time...you know how it is, being the picture taker and blog writer. Tell Stephen, You can't see me, but I'm always there, making it all happen, sort of like God, only not quite. :)
Hello nicol family. wow, we love reading your blog. We had so many boys in our backyard tonight on an impromptu sort of "war" game. When they all congregate from the neighborhood it is very obvious who are missing! Love seeing you on your adventures. But would like to see more of susan (can't the boys turn the camera on her!). Anyway to get email so I could go on and on to Susan for some "girl-chat"? It is truly beautiful at last in Madison. Magnolias are in bloom. FINALLY! Have fun. Aloha. sally and family
ReplyDeleteHey Nicol's family. We have great news. Heron will be going to Randall next year. We would love to hear your views and what to expect. It will be so nice to have the kiddo back in the neighborhood. We've loved the time he has had with Aunt Jamie but she's on a different path so now is the best time to move. Please give us your feedback. Aloha!
ReplyDeleteWow! That's great! I think he will love Randall. Do you have my e-mail address for simpler communication? I'd love yours. Mine is susan.nicol@tds.net. Send me yours and we'll chat where no one else can see our comments!
